Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Services
Dr. Zdinak is a specialty trained eye plastic surgeon. Ophthalmic plastic surgeons are eye surgeons with advanced training in procedures involving the eyelids, the eyebrows, and their surrounding structures. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the Georgetown-Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C. and was fellowship trained in ophthalmic plastic surgery by Stephen L. Bosniak, MD in Manhattan, New York.
Dr. Zdinak has always had a focused interest in the anatomy of the head and neck region and spent much of her pre-residency training operating with head and neck specialists in Chicago. She took this knowledge base with her to her residency program in Washington DC where she sought out and operated with multiple oculoplastic surgeons at this nationally renowned eye trauma facility.
Eager to share her knowledge and to perfect her techniques, Dr. Zdinak moved to New York City to fine tune her surgical skills by making them minimally invasive. She is the most recent fully-trained surgical fellow by the late Dr. Bosniak. Dr. Zdinak does not use a scalpel to perform surgery. Instead, she uses radiosurgery and lasers to minimize bleeding and swelling, allowing for a more rapid recovery.
The following services are offered by Dr. Zdinak and offer visible results when used in combination as prescribed during your consultation.
Surgical Contouring of Excessive Eyelid Skin and Fat [Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty/Transconjunctival Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty]
Upper eyelid and lower eyelid “bags” are actually herniations of the orbital fat that cushions the eye within the eye socket. The patient must carefully consider the training of their surgeon when it comes to solving this particular problem. Dr. Zdinak’s careful preoperative planning with the patient combined with a meticulous surgical skill base can create a safe, natural appearing result with minimal disruption of the eyelid anatomy.
Surgical Correction of Drooping Eyelids [Ptosis Repair]
Drooping eyelids result from a variety of factors the most common of which is stretching of the eyelid muscle that elevates the eyelid [levator aponeurosis dehiscence]. Dr. Zdinak is skilled in a variety of techniques to restore the upper eyelid to its appropriate position through a surgical incision hidden within the natural eyelid crease.
Surgical Eyebrow Lift [Internal Browpexy]
Eyebrows that have lost their internal structural support can sag and give the false appearance of excess eyelid skin and a heavy, overbearing brow. Dr. Zdinak can place the eyebrow back in its proper position via a surgical incision hidden within the natural eyelid crease.
Surgical Correction of Eyelid Shape [Lateral Canthopexy]
The natural, almond-shaped contour of the eye is maintained by a small tendon that attaches the eyelid to the surrounding orbital bones of the eye [lateral canthal tendon]. Over time, this tendon becomes loose and the eye takes on a more rounded appearance. Dr. Zdinak can restore the youthful shape and function of the lower eyelid using a hidden suture technique as opposed to an eyelid cutting procedure.
CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing of the Eyelids
Carbon dioxide [CO2] laser skin resurfacing uses laser energy to remove the superficial layer of the skin. As the skin heals, collagen production is enhanced and the appearance of deep wrinkles and undereye circles is improved. This procedure requires downtime for healing and is reserved for special circumstances. Dr. Zdinak will counsel you regarding this technique if it is applicable to your specific needs.
Pierced ears can lose their elasticity over time, making it difficult to wear earrings properly. Dr. Zdinak can repair the original stretched piercing hole and, once healed, re-pierce the ear so that you can again wear earrings as intended.
The muscles of facial expression become out of balance as we age and the muscles that pull up the face lose the tug of war to the muscles that pull down the face. Dr. Zdinak has extensive experience in restoring the balance of facial musculature using Botox and will tailor your treatment to meet your individual needs to yield a natural, rested result that never appears overdone.
Our faces lose volume as we get older. Eyes appear sunken, cheeks become drawn, and the lips become smaller, lose definition, and develop fine lines. Deep folds appear alongside the nose and mouth that were absent in youth. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring element that is depreciated from the skin tissues over time. Dr. Zdinak is certified in the use of Restylane [hylauronic acid] to restore the volume nature intended to the face.
Bone loss in the face also occurs over time. Cheekbones become less prominent, chins recede, jawlines become less pronounced. Radiesse [calcium hydroxylapatite] is a pure, synthetic injectable compound identical to the mineral portion of human bone. Dr. Zdinak has extensive experience in the use of Radiesse to sculpt chins and jawlines, and for inating the more prominent nasolabial folds in the male face.
Sunken cheeks and temples due to inherited patterns of aging can convey lack of vitality despite robust health. Sculptra [polylactic acid] is a synthetic injectable agent that is FDA approved for the treatment of facial lipoatrophy. Dr. Zdinak customizes the preparation and administration of Sculptra to restore broad areas of lost facial volume, to build cheekbones, and to reduce depressions and fine lines on the chin.
Thermage [radiofrequency surgilifting] uses radiowave energy to heat the deep layers of the dermis and to promote the formation of new collagen yielding tighter, plumper, more youthful appearing skin with improved texture. Dr. Zdinak is certified in the Thermage procedure and has instructed other physicians how to use this technology for non-surgical eyelifts, facelifts, necklifts, and body sculpting.
Carboxy therapy involves the injections of small amounts of carbon dioxide gas beneath the skin surface to improve bloodflow to areas with poor circulation. Dr. Zdinak designed and conducted the original therapeutic trials using this technology in the United States for the treatment of dark undereye circles, cellulite, and stretch marks.
The ancient Egyptians used acids derived from sugar cane and milk to exfoliate dull, lifeless cells from the skin’s surface. Dr. Zdinak uses glycolic acid peels to correct uneven skin tone, to diminish pore size, and to reduce fine lines, and to treat and prevent acne breakouts. These superficial depth peels do not redden the skin and allow for an immediate return to activity--earning them the moniker “the lunchtime peel.”
Intense pulsed light technology uses lightwaves to lighten the appearance of dark spots and broken capillaries that rob the skin of its youthful appearance. Intense pulsed light is also used to treat acne because it destroys the bacteria responsible for acne formation. The pixilated laser can be used to soften pitted acne scars and to reduce larger, deeply pigmented dark spots and smooth fine lines.
Dr. Zdinak uses radiofrequency technology to meticulously shave the mole away layer by layer leaving the normal skin below undisturbed. The same device can be used to reduce small “spider veins” and “cherry-red spots” on the skin.
